HERDMAN, William Gawin (1805-82). Pictorial Relics of Ancient Liverpool, Liverpool: Published for Brown, Barnes & Bell by Gilbert G. Walmsley, 1878. 2 volumes, 2° (411 x 314mm). Half titles, titles printed in red and black, 72 plates "produced in Permanent Autotype Photography by Brown, Barnes & Bell." (Some text leaves browned and spotted.) Finely-bound in crushed burgundy morocco gilt by Howell of Liverpool, spines gilt in compartments, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, a few scuff marks, one more pronounced on upper cover of vol. II). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 97 LITHOGRAPHED AND ENGRAVED PLATES, some printed in colours, many captioned in pencil. The work also includes an example of an early railway ticket (illustrated below) for a journey between Liverpool and Warrington printed on reddish-brown paper and dated 1832 (see Introduction). (2)
