HENRY, David (1710-1792), editor]. An Historical Account of all the voyages round the World, performed by English Navigators . London: F. Newbery, 1774-1773-1775. [ With :] [RICKMAN, John (fl. 1776)]. Journal of Captain Cook's last voyage to the Pacific Ocean on Discovery; performed in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779... Faithfully Narrated from the original MS . London: E. Newbery, 1781. Together 6 volumes, 8° (202 x 119mm.). General title to vol. I, 4 volume titles, 5pp. subscribers' list. 7 engraved folding maps, 56 plates, 3 of which folding. (Very occasional faint browning, spotting and offsetting, slightly heavier to vol. V, tear to folding map in vol. VI with tiny losses to lower longitudinal scale, tiny marginal tears to 3 text leaves.) Uniform contemporary calf (extremities lightly rubbed, spines and joints a little more heavily). Provenance : Rev. George Booth, Bart. (engraved armorial bookplates). FIRST EDITION OF HENRY'S COLLECTED VOYAGES, TOGETHER WITH THE FIRST EDITION OF RICKMAN'S FIRST FULL ACCOUNT IN ENGLISH OF COOK'S THIRD VOYAGE. Henry originally produced four volumes summarizing the great voyages of discovery, adding a fifth (present here) in 1775 about Cook's voyage in the Resolution , and a sixth in 1786. This latter is replaced in the present set by Elizabeth Newbery's (widow of Francis, the publisher of the other 5 vols) publication of Rickman's account of the Third Voyage. Despite the Admiralty's orders that all logs, journals, maps and illustrations should be handed over to Captain King and sealed, Rickman (Second Lieutenant on the Discovery ), managed to retain an illicit copy of his journal. Based on this, the work was published anonymously, predating the official account by more than two years. 'The text, especially as regards details of Cook's death, differs considerably from other accounts' (Hill). 'The several states of the first edition of this account are indicative of the haste in which the manuscript was rushed into print' (Forbes). Henry: Beddie 655, 711 (vols III, IV), 1270 (vol. V); Hill 800; Sabin 31389. Rickman: Beddie 1607; Forbes 33 (state 'B', no priority established); Hill 1453; Sabin 36707. (6)
