HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph letter signed ("Ernest Hemingway"), to Mr. Seippert, 6 Rue Feron, Paris, November 1927. One page, 4to, pencil notations in a later hand in three corners . "WRITE AND KEEP ON WRITING" AND "REALLY SEE WHAT'S GOING ON AND LISTEN AND KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN" Hemingway gives good advice to an aspiring writer and thanks him for kinds words about The Sun Also Rises . "Thank you ever so much for writing about the book," Hemingway tells Seippert. "Living over here and rarely seeing anybody that reads my stuff it feels very good to hear from some one directly that they like it. If you really want to write I don't know any advice to give you except to write and keep on writing. And not to be discouraged if the stuff is no good. Because it would be a very bad sign if it was anything else for a long time." It seems Hemingway initially thought of leaving it at that and signing off -- "Best luck anyway and thanks again for writing." -- But he has a second thought and goes back to squeeze in another crucial line of advice to the aspiring writer: "It doesn't matter where you go or what you do as long as you really see what's going on and listen and keep your eyes open." A fine insight into Hemingway's thoughts on the craft of writing-and living-as the success of Sun Also Rises transformed him from an obscure ex-patriate in Paris to a world famous author. Unpublished. Not in Baker, Selected Letters .
