Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery, with a Description of the Geographical and Geological Features, and Some Account of the Resources of the Great West .
New York: Julius Bien 1870. Quarto (12 x 9 ¼ inches, 302x235 mm). 30 mounted albumen photographs by A. J. Russell. Contemporary half green morocco gilt. Condition: Foxing to the text and plates, bookplate removed from the front pastedown; binding worn. first edition, containing among the most important early photographs of wyoming and utah. . Andrew Joseph Russell (1829-1902) was commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad to photographically document the construction of the route from Omaha to Sacramento. Reduced from the original, much larger glass plate negatives, twelve of these photographs show scenes in Wyoming, sixteen in Utah, and two in the Sierra Nevada. The text is of note as well, well-written by Hayden, the head of the United States Geographical and Geological Survey of the Territories, and providing among the earliest geological descriptions of this Rocky Mountain region.
