(Soft crease on title, some pale spotting at beginning, last leaf with small marginal loss not affecting text.) Original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, cream endpapers (slightest edgewear, generally fresh); red cloth folding case. Provenance : M.W. Tappan, probably Mason W. Tappan representative from New Hampshire (1817-1886), who delivered the speech "'Modern' Democracy,' the ally of slavery" in the House of Representatives, July 29, 1856 (pencil signature on flyleaf dated April 9, 1850); Stephen M. Dryfoos (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, with 4-page publisher's advertisement dated March 1, 1850 bound in at front. In spite of the the controversial subject matter, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success. 2,500 copies were sold in its first week of publication, lifting Hawthorne out of literary obscurity.
