Provenance : Mark Marrott (early inscription on first text leaf, his manuscript diagram of Line of Chords dated 1788 on B2v); Peter Harris (signature dated 1797 on title, signature on 2Ar); Richard Wilait (early inscription on first text leaf); Robert Beacham Causey (inscription on first text leaf verso); early manuscript calculations and annotations on endleaves, title-page and some text leaves in several early hands. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK ON PRACTICAL NAVIGATION IN ENGLISH PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES. The work was first published in London, 1757, and Adams and Waters record some 15 London and one Dublin editions prior to this American edition. Haselden is described on the title of the present volume as "Late Teacher of Mathematics in the Royal Navy" and the address to the reader is signed in print by him. As evidenced by the extensive use by several early readers of this copy, Haselden's text was of a practical nature intended as a guide for sailors. See also previous lot.
