The Fishes of North America that are captured on hook and line with … colored plates made from oil portraits of living fishes before their color tints had faded .
New York: The Fishes of North America Publishing Ltd., [1895-]1898. Volume 1 only [all published]. Folio (18 ¾ x 12 inches, 475 x 305mm). 40 chromolithographed plates and numerous uncolored illustrations. Modern half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine tooled in gilt and blind, t.e.g. Condition : Blindstamp to title, old crease to inner margin of title, small tear to lower margin of title, inner tape repair to blank margins of the dedication leaf and the mount of the final plate with the upper outer corner creased. a beautifully-produced work with forty large-scale chromolithographic images of game fish. The author promises that “neither labor nor money will be economized in the effort to make the publication unequalled in angling literature.” ( Preface ). While only this first volume was ever published, the noble fragment that remains stands as a proud memorial. one of the great american fishing books . Burns B80; Litchfield 65; Nissen ZBI 1840; Wetzel 153.
