Beschreibung:

hand-coloured engraved peepshow, top with engraving showing Wapping Entrance laid down on blue board and with 2 circular peepholes, 3 hand-coloured panels showing tunnel with pedestrians pasted on, lightly stained, small tear to first engraving, explanatory leaf of text mounted on front pastedown, original cloth-backed marbled boards with paper label on upper cover, rubbed and stained, oblong 8vo, [after March 1843]. *** One of many peepshows of the tunnel of the 1840s and '50s. According to the explanatory leaf T.C. Brandon, "Perspective View Manufacturer" had counter 46 in the tunnel. The note states that the "road will be 40 feet wide" suggesting that this is an early example. In later versions the insert describes the booths, stalls and refreshment facilities available at the annual fair held 25th March in each year to commemorate the opening of the tunnel on that date in 1843. The tunnel remained a tourist attraction for some years - particularly for visitors to the Great Exhibion of 1851 and on the occasion of the annual fair. In 1865, it was sold to the East London Railway and reopened for train traffic on 6 December 1869 giving the LB & SCR access to Liverpool Street and the Great Eastern system and an improved route for the nightime delivery to its depots of coal from the Midlands and North.
