Autograph letter signed ("John Hancock," with usual flourish) as President of the Continental Congress, to the President of the Provincial Convention of New York, Philadelphia, 31 May 1775. 1 page, 4to, 220 x 180 mm. (8 7/8 x 7 in.), upper margin trimmed (shaving one letter), miniscule repairs from verso, a bit discolored, docketed on verso . THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS PREPARES TO DEFEND NEW YORK A letter of transmittal, written in the crucial early period just after the Lexington and Concord battles, when Congress began actively preparing for war by requisitioning supplies and munitions: "I am Directed by the Congress to Transmit [to] your Convention their Resolve, and to Desire an immediate Compliance with it so far as it Respects the furnishing [of] Batterys [with] Provisions, stores, etc..."
