HAMMOND, W.R. -- A family album, oblong 4°, with both photographs and press cuttings pasted in, including 7 large size wedding photographs, cuttings about the wedding at Bingley on April 25, 1929, a printed invitation and order of service, also with two earlier photographs of Hammond at Bingley in 1928, one with golf club, many informal snapshots of family and team mates, some on board ship, one of Hammond in his favourtie plus fours, a larger photograph of Hammond and Patsy Hendren, smiling in suits, signed by both players, and another of Hendren and Hammond walking out to bat before making centuries against New South Wales in 1930, again signed, a signed snapshot of Hobbs and two of other cricketing friends, and at the end a tipped-in menu for a cricketing dinner on 11 September, 1930, signed in pencil by members of the Australian team (first leaf of the album detached), bound in original morocco-backed cloth (worn); with a smaller scrap album. (2) The principal album appears to have been largely compiled between 1929 and 1931, although there are later press cuttings, including -- strangely -- a short newspaper account of the divorce proceedings, published under the heading: "W.R. Hammond. Decree for Wife." This reads: "The parties were married on April 24, 1929, at Bingley, at Bingley Parish Church. After the marriage they lived in Somerset, Hendon and Gloucestershire. There were no children of the marriage, and the parties lived happilly until December, 1940, by which time the husband was serving in the Royal Air Force. At the end of that year, he went abroad on service, and the wife had never lived with him since December 27, 1940. Her husband returned to this country about Christmas 1943, without telling her of his arrival. She later heard that he had been living with a woman in South Africa. In May, 1945, she saw her husband and tried to come to some agreement, but he wanted a divorce ...." On the facing page is a larger cutting from the Yorkshire Evening Post , with an article by Bill Bowes reporting the death of "Hammond -- the super sportsman. Golfer ... Boxer ... Flier ... Driver" at Durban at the age of 62.
