After leaving off County cricket I went to Sir Julian Cahn's & was with him for 14 years, played against New Zealand when I was 55 years old and made 101 Not Out. I was coaching there & Umpiring when I left off playing for him. When we were in Australia in 1901 & 2 we were coming to New Zealand but Mr. McLaren found we had not time to come so it had to be put off." Alluding to W.G. Grace and A.C. Maclaren in his final letters, he says: "You ask about W.G. Grace I have played for him when he ran his London County Team at Crystal Palace and played against him several times got him out both innings in the Gentlemen v. Players Team at the Oval, he was a funny old man he often had two or three innings the umpire's were afraid to give him out. But he was a fine player. You ask about Mr. McLaren he was a fine player and a very fine skipper. I played under him in Australia in all the Tests ... Our cricket in England now is not in the same street as it was a few years ago, you don't see any players now like Ranji & Fry a nice pair to bowl at when they got going. I have some hours at them both, I should say that Ranji was the best player I have ever seen, such quick eyes and supple-wrists no players now like those I don't think," he mentions Wilf Rhodes and Jack Hobbs and touches on current matches being played.
