(Lacking title-page, some light even browning to a few plates; the last 12 plates remargined to size.) Contemporary half russia, spine elaborately tooled in blind, marbled endpapers and edges (joints cracked, edges rubbed, chips to head and tail caps). While on the Grand Tour, the Earl of Bute collected original drawings by the Bolognese artist, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri called Guercino (1591-1666). These drawings were later given to George III and entered the Royal Collection. George III's librarian, Richard Dalton met Francesco Bartolozzi in Italy in the early 1760s. This brought Bartolozzi to London in 1764 under the employ of Dalton. He worked on a series of etchings after Guercino. Other engravers on the project included Dalton himself, James Basire Giovanni Vitalba and Lady Louisa Augusta Greville The prints were bought by the London publishers John and Josiah Boydell and published in two volumes, the first being the present work, the second entitled Seventy-three prints .
