GÜNTHER, Albert Carl Ludwig Gotthilf (1830-1914). The Gigantic Land-tortoises (living and extinct) in the collection of the British Museum. London: Taylor and Francis, printed by order of the Trustees, 1877. Large 4° (322 x 250mm). 55 lithographic plates by the Mintern brothers after C.L. Greiesbach, J. Erxleben, R. Mintern, G.H. Ford, W.H. Wesley, extra-illustrated with a later lithograph from the Surveyor General's Office, Colombo, and 4 loosely inserted sheets of mounted pencil tracings of tortoise shells and bones. (Occasional unobtrusive spotting.) Original cloth (rebacked). Provenance : Robert Theodore Günther (armorial bookplate). A rare monograph on the giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands (living), Mauritius, Réunion, and elsewhere (extinct), with excellent lithographs. The introduction includes an interesting selection of quotations from earlier accounts of the tortoises. Only one copy of this work is listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty-five years.
