Title within engraved allegorical border, 6 full-page engravings by Francesco Velesio (lacks portrait). 17th-century limp Italian painted vellum, each cover with painted floral border, front cover with central figure of Victory with motto "Exultat Miles Victoria Parta," rear cover with unfinished figure of a flower with motto "Dat Nervis Salvia Vire" (some rubbing, especially to rear cover, ties lacking). Provenance : Giovanni Battista Stella (signature on title and front pastedown); puchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1958. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of the most influential pastoral play of all time, to which is added the first edition of Guarini's final contribution to the debate on dramatic principles which had been started by the success of the Pastor Fido . The illustrations show theatrical costumes of the period, taken from an actual performance, showing the stage-settings prepared by Aleotti for the performance at the Mantuan court in 1598.
