Lot of 34. Diverse group of papers. One group of three retained copies of letters relate to the Panama-Pacific and Panama-California Expositions. On Executive Office, Helena, MT letterhead, 7 April 1913, 3pp. Signed S.V. Stewart. To Charles Kelly Butte, MT. Relating to Montana's representation at the expos. Another letter is to Governor Stewart, declining appointment to this committee, on Hennessey Company, Butte, Mt. letterhead, 18 April 1913. Not signed. The third letter is to various county boards of commissioners informing them of the committee's makeup and funding. N.d., 3 legal sized (85 x 13 in.) pages. According to Laws of the 11th Legislature, "... the boards of county commissioners, upon receiving a petition signed by at least fifty resident freeholders and tax payers... to make an appropriation from the general fund of the county for "the purpose of advertising the agricultural, commercial, mining, manufacturing, labor and other industrial resources of the county." Two state auditors' receipts for discharge of prisoners H.G. Chaney and Chas. Anderson. Dated Sept. 17 and 25, 1883. Nice graphic of "Indian princess" along left side. Two typed notes on Conley & McTague, "Contractors Montana State Penitentiary" in Deer Lodge, dated Feb. 9 and 23, 1899. Each for receipt of a prisoner from a county jail. Two receipts for prisoners from Silver Bow County, Oct. 10 and Nov. 2, 1881, plus two receipts for expenses incurred in transporting these prisoners to the U.S.Penitentiary at Deer Lodge. Two receipts for clothing for discharge of prisoners, 28 Feb. 1875 and May 1874. On Montana Penitentiary tri-fold form. Two letters, one from the Governor of Montana, Robert Smith dated 7 July 1899, 2pp, and the Deer Lodge County Sheriff's Office, May 17, 1899, 1p, both concerning the "David Pelkier matter." These seem to be concerning the costs of counsel and transportation. Account page with cost of keeping prisoners from 1st Judicial District (3); 2nd Judicial District (10), and 3rd Judicial District (5), at 31.00 per month, including receipt for the $558.00. Plus one not yet in prison, but the accounting page for "Louis/Lewy the Hermit" and what he owed to Daems & Yager apothecary, Deer Lodge, for 1874. The account includes such things ad "Spirits of Camphor," "Iceland Moss," "Licorice Root," several boxes of "Jaynes Pills," and more. [Possibly "Jayne's Sanative Pill for Liver Complaints, Jaundice, Dyspepsia, Fevers, Nervousness & Impurity of the Blood," a popular late 19th century patent medicine.] Four canceled checks drawn on E.H. Hershfield & Bro., Bankers in Helena, Montana. Dated 12 and 19 of September, 1870 (two from each date). One note and one letter on First National Bank, Deer Lodge, Montana letterhead, March 14 and 16, 1875. Madison County Bond, paid and canceled, with three coupons remaining attached. Petition to destroy English sparrows which had become pests in the town of Miles City; signed by 16 people. Copy (carbon) of the list of Registered Voters of Miles City, First Ward, 1907, 7 pages plus page with certification. Petition from Police Chief and his men requesting an advance in salary. Miles City, Montana, 22 June, 1900. Receipt from Wells, Fargo and Company Express for the transport of $6000 in gold dust and bars to New York from Helena. And a receipt for J.H. Sherburne, Security Bank of Minnesota, Browning, Montana, June 29, 1899. Plus a group of general communications, some of which are amusing. One note from Mrs. C.W. Kelly is directed to the Mayor and City Council of Miles City, April 8, 1912. "Please instruct all saloon-keepers in Miles City, to discontinue the sale of any liquors or beverages, to my husband Mr. C.W. Kelly." A lengthier note from the mayor of Butte, MT, 28 May 1911 to one of his younger constituents reads: "My dear Lad: Your very frank criticism of my conduct is received this morning and I think you for being such a courageous boy. I don't think I could make you understand that while the s
