Colored engraved title, lithographic title to second volume on India paper mounted, 36 colored aquatints by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, Bentley, Pyall, Hughes, and Edge, after Grindlay, Westall, Stanfeld, Roberts, Purser, Witherington, Fielding and Daniell, and colored by J.B. Hogarth. Modern morocco gilt, gilt edges by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London (light rubbing at edges). Provenance: W. A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey (bookplate; his sale Christie's London, 13 July 2000, lot 821). FIRST EDITION of one of the most beautiful color plate books on India, with the early state of plates, text and titles for individual parts. The subjects include scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora and Guzerat. Grindlay, founder of the ANZ Grindlays Bank, came to India in 1803, worked with the East India Company and served with the Seventh Bombay Native Infantry from 1804-1820. It is rare in such works for the name of the colorist, in this case J.B. Hogarth, to be given. Scenery was issued in six parts between 1826 and 1830. Abbey Travel 442; Colas 1333; Tooley 239.
