GREEK TERRACOTTA STATUETTE 3rd century BC A terracotta figurine of a standing nude Aphrodite with right arm raised; earrings, bracelet and anklet integrally modelled; elaborate piled hairstyle. 469 grams, 36.5cm (14 1/2"). Fair condition; repaired, one arm broken. Provenance Property of an American collector; acquired Europe 1970s-1990s. Footnotes The figurine represents Aphrodite Anadyomene meaning "Aphrodite Who Rises from the Sea." The image shows Aphrodite shortly after she was born from the Mediterranean sea and drying her hair on the shore of Cyprus. The original image was a painting by the famous painter Apelles who is said tho have modelled the image on a famous coutesan. The painting became so famous that it was copied in sculpture throughout the Hellenistic and Roman periods and has continued to be the defining image of Aphrodite to this day.
