GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Report of Lieutenant General U.S. Grant, of the Armies of the United States. 1864--'65 . [Washington: Government Printing Office, 1866]. 8 o (230 x 147 mm). (Browning to front and end leaf and some pages, corners of first pages slightly bent). Stabbed and sewn. Quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Frederick W. Skiff (paper bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate). GRANT'S REPORT OF ARMY OPERATIONS, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR in the top margin of the front leaf ("U.S. Grant Lt. Gen. U.s.a."). Grant submitted his official account of the last year of the war only three months after Appomattox Courthouse. It details the campaigns that resulted in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The report provides an intriguing overview of Grant's plan to bring constant pressure upon the Confederate Army in multiple theaters, a strategy which ultimately brought the victory that Abraham Lincoln had so long desired. Howes G311; Sabin 28316.
