GOULD, Jay (1836-1892) -- Catalogue of Books forming the Library of Jay Gould, Lindhurst, Irvington-on-Hudson. Philadelphia: Globe Printing Hosue, 1890. 4 o (278 x 220 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black. Contemporary three-quarter morocco (upper cover detached, rubbing to lower joint). Provenance : John Bigelow (presentation signed by Gould, bookplate); New York Public library (duplicate stamp); Grolier Club (bookplate); Harrison D. Horblit (sold Christie's East, New York, 16 Feb. 1994 lot 277). LIMITED EDITION, number 21 of 100 copies, with and ALS by Gould to Bigelow discussing the library tipped in. "The library of "5000 volumes filled all the book cases both in the library and Art Gallery." It included a set of Audubon's The Birds of America. Gould was one of the most powerful railroad executives and financiers of the 19th-century.
