Gorham Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Gem-Set and Pearl Gothic Style Chalice 14 kt., of raised Gothic-style pointed arches and repeating quatrafoil design with polished chalice cup and base, centering one collet-set old-mine cut diamond ap. 3.60 cts., accented by 94 collet-set old-mine cut diamonds ap. 15.95 cts., 6 round cabochon amethysts ap. 7.5 to 7.0 mm., atop a six-curved paneled base of cross, the Alpha and Omega symbols and converted appliqués centering one oval sapphire ap. 12.35 cts., one marquise-shaped amethyst ap. 8.05 cts., one pearl ap. 5.8 mm., and 129 old-mine cut diamonds ap. 12.35 cts., signed The Gorham Co., with maker's mark , base with personal engraving reading 'Reverend Joseph P. Donahue, in Loving Memory of My Father, Mother and Brothers, Margaret M. Grady, June 8th, 1914 , ap. 515 dwts. 9 1/4 x 6 9/16 inches. With wood fitted case and silver-gilt pall with IHS monogram and Crown of Thorns engraving. The pearl has not been tested. Most Reverend Joseph Patrick Donahue Born in New York City in 1870, Joseph Patrick Donahue attended Manhattan College prior to entering St. Joseph's Seminary in Troy, NY, where he studied for the priesthood. He was ordained on June 8, 1895. He served as a curate for nine years, then secretary to Bishop Thomas F. Cusack of New York, and later Albany. From 1913 until 1924, Rev. Donahue was pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Mamaroneck, after which he returned to New York City as pastor of Ascension Church. He was named Diocesan Consultor in 1936 and appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York in 1939. At St. Patrick's Cathedral on March 19, 1945, the Feast of St. Joseph, Rev. Donahue was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of New York and Titular Bishop of Emmaüs by Archbishop Francis J. Spellman at a Solemn Pontifical Mass attended by 4,000 congregants. Bishop Donahue died fourteen years later on April 26, 1959. His funeral mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral was again officiated by Cardinal Spellman. Margaret M. Grady was the sister of New York State Senator Thomas F. Grady, a prominent legislator associated with Tammany Hall. His funeral mass in 1912 was attended by a multitude of people in public life. It was officiated by Rev. Donahue at St. Stephen's Church. The date engraved on the chalice, June 8, 1914, marks the 19th anniversary of Bishop Donahue's ordination to the priesthood. C
Center diamond: H-I-J-VS. Diamonds: most G-H-I-few J-K-VS-few SI, few with small chips. Sapphire: medium bright sligthly violetish blue, faint fingerprint inclusion in table and crown, patch of silk to side, slightly visible to eye, lively. Amethyst: medium deep purple, cleanish, lively. Pearl: white, smooth, medium-thin nacre to sides, medium luster, round shape. Height: 9 1/4 inches. Diameter of base: 6 9/16 inches. Elongate tapering modified octagonal wood case: 14 x 9 x 8 5/16 inches.
