The 12 December 1875 letter reports that a local tribe had killed Linant de Bellefonds and some 40 men in August. Muggi was one of Gordon's stations on the Nile. Romolo Gessi was an Italian subject, born in Constantinople in 1832. He fought with Garibaldi and became interpreter to the British forces in Crimea, where he met Gordon. They met again in Rumania, and he later joined Gordon at Gondokoro in 1874. Gessi took command of the Nile expedition and with Carlo Piaggia, circumnavigated Lake Albert (the 25 May 1876 letter was written after his return from that expedition). Giegler (1844-1921) emigrated to England from Schweinfurt in 1873, and went to Egypt as a telegraph engineer, later rising to become director of the Sudan & Red Sea Posts & Telegraphs, and then deputy governor of Sudan.
