A survey of old South African paintings drawings and prints to the end of the nineteenth century with a biographical dictionary of one thousand artists
Published: A.A. Balkema, Cape Town, 1975
x plus 254pp. Cloth hardcover with DW. Edna and Frank Bradlow Ex Libris bookplate to front fixed EP. Light foxing to EPs and pre-title page. Internally clean and tight. Included are three letters addressed to Frank Bradlow, one of which is from the British Embassy in Pretoria, one from the University of Cape Town Manuscripts and Archives Dept. and one from a Mr Carl Szego concerning some sketches by an artist by the name of Ridge. Included also are two black and white prints of old Cape paintings belonging to a Mrs. Fry and taken from E.H. Orway's sketch-books, both with handwritten references on the rear. Then there is a Season's Greetings card from Frank & Noel Robb with a reproduction of 'No32. St. Georges Street, Cape Town, 1838' on the front. "Paintings and drawings from earliest times up to the year 1900 are discussed and considerable attention has been given to the neglected subject of prints of South African interest. The main body of this work is a biographical dictionary, with over 1000 entries. Here will be found notes on all the known artists and engravers who contributed to South Africa's pictorial history... Collectors and Africana specialists will find this work an indispensible reference and working tool.
