GOORLE, Abraham van (1549-1609). Dactyliotheca seu annulorum sigillarium quorum apud priscos tam Graecos quam Romanos usus . [?Antwerp or Leiden: ?the author, ?1601 or 1609].
GOORLE, Abraham van (1549-1609). Dactyliotheca seu annulorum sigillarium quorum apud priscos tam Graecos quam Romanos usus . [?Antwerp or Leiden: ?the author, ?1601 or 1609]. 4° (193 x 152mm). Engraved title, engraved portrait frontispiece by Jacques de Gheyn II with verse by Hugo Grotius beneath [New Hollstein De Gheyn 245], and 138 engraved plates. Woodcut initials. (A little variable light spotting and browning, one plate slightly waterstained.) Contemporary Netherlandish calf gilt, boards with borders of blind and gilt rules with floral cornerpieces, central oval block, spine gilt in compartments (rubbed causing loss of most of the surface, extremities rubbed and chipped with small losses, a few plates partially detached). Provenance : early initials at foot of title -- manuscript note in Dutch on margin of one plate -- John Woollin (early inscriptions on title and margin of frontispiece) -- Edward Hailstone (1810-1890, gilt morocco bookplate with surname spelt 'Hailctone'). THE HAILSTONE COPY OF VAN GOORLE'S CATALOGUE OF HIS COLLECTION OF ANCIENT RINGS AND SEALS. Van Goorle assembled a number of collections, which included his celebrated cabinet of ancient seals and rings, which are described and illustrated in this work; after his death, this collection was acquired in 1610 by Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594-1612). This edition is thought to be a later issue of the first edition published in Delft or Leiden, c. 1601; it is possible that it was issued with or intended to accompany the edition of Pomponio Gaurico's De sculptura liber , probably published in Antwerp in 1609. The John Woollin whose signature appears on the title was possible the clergyman who was educated at Merton and Oriel Colleges, Oxford (M.A. 1722 and B.D. 1735); the book was then acquired by the antiquarian and bibliophile Edward Hailstone. Hailstone formed major collections of both antiquities and books at Walton Hall, near Wakefield; the library, which occupied the whole of the upper floor, included a major collection of works relating to Yorkshire, described in his Catalogue of a Collection of Historical and Topographical Works and Civil War Tracts, Relating to the County of York (Bradford: 1858). Hailstone's other works include The History and Antiquities of the Parish of Bottisham and the Priory of Anglesey in Cambridgeshire (Cambridge: 1851) and Portraits of Yorkshire Worthies (London: 1869). Cf. Brunet II, 1671; cf. Cicognara 2871; cf. Ter Meulen and Diermanse Grotius 247.
