GOODALL, William (1757-1844). An extensive collection of approximately 400 watercolor drawings of animals. An outstanding collection of watercolors. In many cases, Goodall has identified the sources of his drawings, both by location and by author/artist. Places include the Arctic Regions, Australia, British Isles, Cuba, East Indies, Japan, Java, Madagascar, Peru, South America, Sumatra, Surinam and Valparaiso, and are taken from Edwards, Shaw and many others. The subjects are primarily quadrupeds and primates, and are rendered in detailed, finished style. Most include fully colored backgrounds showing the animals in their natural habitats. A large series of bats is also found, as is a series of monkeys. Most also include a scale at the bottom of the image. 400 sheets each approximately 322 x 196 mm. Most signed "W. Goodall" lower center margin, headed with class and genus at top and identified by species underneath the subject. Loose in two modern cloth folding cases. [England, late 18th/early 19th century]. William Goodall was educated at Eton and became an ordained priest of the Church of England. He served as absentee rector at All Saints Church, Marsham, near Aylsham in Norfolk from 1787-1844. In 1788 he married the sole heiress of Dinton Hall, Buckinghamshire, making him lord of the manor and a Justice of the Peace for Bucks. Painting was a life-long hobby.
