GOLDSMITH, Oliver (1728-1774). Autograph receipt signed, n.p., n.d. [1760], five lines written on one page, 122 x 125 mm , annotated ('Goldsmith') in a contemporary hand in blank portion of leaf (slightly browned, traces of guard on verso); in a brown calf-backed cloth case. Provenance : purchased from W.H. Robinson, London, 15 December 1937, £100. Receipt for the payment by 'Mr Ralp[h] Griffiths' of 'the sum of ten pounds and ten shillings for the translation of a book entituled (sic) Memoirs of My Lady B'. Referring to a 'lost work' by Goldsmith, which was included in the list of new books in the Gentleman's Magazine for January, 1761. The original was the Memoires de Milady B by Charlotte-Marie-Anne-Charbonnier de la Guesnerie, published in 1760. Ralph Griffiths was the proprietor of several journals to which Goldsmith contributed, while lodging in Griffiths' house, and he also translated works from French for him. Their relationship did not run smoothly, and in 1759 Goldsmith took offence at a review, presumably printed with Griffiths' agreement, of his Present State of Polite Learning , in the Monthly Review , in which he was referred to as a 'sharper'. The receipt shows that despite this, they remained in communication.
