GOLDSMITH, Oliver (1728-1774). Autograph receipt signed for William Griffin n.p., 22 June 1773, 4 lines written on one page, 72 x 170 mm , tipped on to a mount, in a 20th-century tan morocco folder, by Riviere. A receipt for two hundred and fifty pounds for 'writing and compiling the history of Greece from Mr William Griffin', promising 'a further assignment on demand'. Goldsmith's Grecian History was published in 2 volumes, in 1774. Griffin also published Goldsmith's most successful poem, The Deserted Village (1769). The receipt is included in Balderston's Census of Manuscripts of Oliver Goldsmith , and was in the collection of Rowland Ryles Egerton-Warburton. William Griffin bookseller in the Strand, was Goldsmith's particular friend. Irish himself, he was a patron of Irish men of letters in London.
