GODWIN, WILLIAM. Mandeville. A Tale of the Seventeenth Century in England. Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable and Co. and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London, 1817. 3 vols. in 2, 12mo, contemporary tree calf, original spines (worn) laid down, bright new red and blue morocco spine labels, fore-corners a bit worn, a flyleaf loose and a text leaf loosening in the first vol, brown calf slipcase (scuffed). FIRST EDITION, with the half-titles. Laid in: An autograph promissory note signed by Godwin, [London] No. 21 St. James Street, 6 May 1817, 1 page, oblong tall 8vo, a little wrinkled : "Two months after date I promise to pay to Mr. W. Child or ones eight pounds 17/11 for value recd. W. Godwin," endorsed/docketed on verso by Child and others. Tinker 1084; Wolff 2588. Mandeville was Godwin's last novel, a study of madness set against the background of the English Civil War. [ With :] WILLIAM GODWIN Autograph document signed, "Memorandum of an agreement between Messrs. Constable & Co. & Mr. W. Godwin, December 1816," for the publication of Mandeville , [London], receipt at end dated 10 December 1816. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, both sides of one leaf, with integral blank leaf, three fold tears in each leaf cutting across a few words (but nothing missing) , signed by Godwin and Archibald Constable at end. In the first three terms of the agreement Godwin states when the manuscript for each of the three volumes is due: "1st. The first volume of Mandeville to be put into Mr. Constable's hands for the press by the 16th instant..." In the fourth term Godwin deals with payment:"4th. Messrs. Constable & Co. agree to advance to Mr. Godwin two hundred & fifty pounds by their promissory notes; for which Mr. Godwin is to convey to them one fourth more of the profits...Messrs. Constable & Co. have already purchased one half of the profits of the work for five hundred pounds...Mr. Godwin's share remaining at one fourth of the profits..." Below the Godwin and Constable signatures at end, Godwin has receipted the advance: "Recd. of Messrs. Constable & Co. this day, Dec. 10, 1816, two promissory notes of 125 each, dated the 7th inst. at nine & ten months after date. W. Godwin." (4)
