GOA 1674 -- DELLON, Charles. Relation de l'Inquisition de Goa . Paris: Daniel Horthmels, 1688.
GOA 1674 -- DELLON, Charles. Relation de l'Inquisition de Goa . Paris: Daniel Horthmels, 1688. 12 o (158 x 82 mm). Title vignette, 6 head-pieces and 6 plates (3 double-page) by CORNELIS VERMEULEN after PIERRE PAUL SEVIN Contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt (some light wear to spine). Second edition, first issue (with plates signed and privilege at end), of this gripping eye-witness report on the methods used by the Inquisition at Goa, headquarters for all Portuguese colonies beyond the Cape of Good Hope. Charles Dellon, a French physician, was denounced to the Inquisition in 1674 while travelling in India, tried by the tribunal and condemned to the galleys for five years. Through the interference of a ship's captain his term was revised and Dellon finally set free after more than two years of imprisonment. His impartially written narrative includes his facsinating comments on one of the notorious auto-da-fé ceremonies as witnessed by him (with illustrations). The book was placed on the Index on May 29, 1690 and all editions are VERY RARE. The first edition was published at Leyden in 1687. Barbier IV:210; Borba de Moraes 216-17 (1709 ed.).
