Der zunächst zum Juristen augebildete Capogrossi bildete sich von 1927 bis 1933 in Paris künstlerisch weiter und bschäftigte sich in dieser Zeit intensiv mit den unterschiedlichen zu seiner Zeit herrschenden Kunstströmungen. Es waren vor allem die Werke von Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) und seinem Landsmann Amedeo Modigliani (1881-1920), die ihn nachhaltig beeinflussen sollten. 1937 zog er schließlich nach Italien zurück. Seine Sujets suchte er zunächst im Ländlich-Bäuerlichen. Ab den 1950er Jahren wandte er sich jedoch völlig von der gegenständlichen Malerei ab und vollkommen der Abstraktion zu. Er entwickelte eine eigenständige Bildsprache, bestehend aus Ellipsen und ovalen Formen, die er häufig in horizontalen Bändern aneinander reiht. Auf dem vorliegenden Gemälde reihen sich die fast an Buchstaben erinnernden Zeichen in dieser horizontalen Anordnung aneinander. Die strenge Reihung wird jedoch durch monochrome rechteckige Flächen aufgelockert und unterbrochen, indem diese Felder teils unter, teils über den randähnlichen Ellipsen liegen. Capogrossi geht damit in seiner Abstraktion mit der Vermischung des Davor und Dahinter noch einen Schritt weiter. Proveninez: Privatsammlung, Rom. Titled and numbered on the reverse. Framed with glass. Capogrossi initially trained as a lawyer before studying art in Paris between 1927 and 1933. During this period he engrossed himself deeply in studying contemporary art trends. It was above all the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir Pablo Picasso and his fellow countryman Amedeo Modigliani that would have a lasting influence on his work. In 1937 he returned to Italy where he initially finds inspiration in rural and peasant life for the content of his works. From the 1950s onwards he turns away completely from figurative art and only paints abstractly. He develops his own visual language comprising elliptical and oval shapes that he often threads together in horizontal bands. In the painting on offer in this lot symbols reminiscent of letters are strung together in a horizontal arrangement. This geometrical sequence is loosened and broken up by monochrome colour fields placed in parts over and beneath the ellipses. Thus, Capogrossi takes his abstraction a step further by confounding what is in front and what is behind. Provenance: Private collection, Rome. Literature: G.
