The attractively penned manuscript document is addressed to Thomas, Lord Viscount Dupplin and Thomas Potter, Paymaster General of Our Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces and authorises the payment of £20,000 to John Thomlinson and John Hanbury, merchants who 'have represented unto us that a further sum of Twenty thousand pounds is necessary to enable them to pay several Bills drawn before the expiration of their contracts by their agents in North America to answer the demands of the Deputy Paymasters there….' Countersigned at the foot by the Duke of Devonshire (1720-1764, British Prime Minister 1756-57), Henry Bilson-Legge (1708-1764, English Statesman, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1754-55, 1756-57 & 1757-61) and Viscount Duncannon. Also signed to the verso by both Thomlinson and Hanbury. An interesting document featuring the extremely rare signature of the Duke of Devonshire.
