Beschreibung:

Albumen photograph, 7.75 x 4.75 in. (sight), framed to 14 x 11.25 in., with imprint of Mathew Brady ("Brady / Washington") visible below image. Group portrait of Ulysses S. Grant (18822-1885) at center with a roll of papers in his hand, surrounded by Union officers, including General John Rawlins, Grant's aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Levi Bird Duff, Colonel Adam Badeau, Lieutenant Colonel Theodore S. Bowers, General John G. Barnard, Lieutenant Colonel Ely S. Parker, and Major William Babcock, standing before a tent in a wooded area. African American figures are visible in the background on either side of the tent. An engraving was made after Brady's photograph and published as an illustration in Harper's Weekly, July 23, 1864. In early May of 1864, General Grant launched his ambitious Overland Campaign, during which time he was headquartered in Cold Harbor, VA. Pitted against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, Grant and his men engaged with Confederate forces throughout the month in a series of battles that culminated on June 3, 1864 with the disastrous Second Battle of Cold Harbor. After nearly two weeks of bloody conflict, Grant withdrew unsuccessfully and ordered his men across the James River, where they attempted to disable the Confederate rail network at the crucial access point of Petersburg. Condition: Not examined outside frame. Small tear and areas of surface abrasion at perimeter. Fading to Brady imprint.
