African American figures are visible in the background on either side of the tent. An engraving was made after Brady's photograph and published as an illustration in Harper's Weekly, July 23, 1864. In early May of 1864, General Grant launched his ambitious Overland Campaign, during which time he was headquartered in Cold Harbor, VA. Pitted against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, Grant and his men engaged with Confederate forces throughout the month in a series of battles that culminated on June 3, 1864 with the disastrous Second Battle of Cold Harbor. After nearly two weeks of bloody conflict, Grant withdrew unsuccessfully and ordered his men across the James River, where they attempted to disable the Confederate rail network at the crucial access point of Petersburg.
