Beschreibung:

Heywood, Thomas. A bit of a mystery volume, the title page indicates that this is The Generall History of Women, Containing the Lives if the most Holy and Prophane, the most Famous and Infamous in all Places, exactly described not only in the Poetical Fictions, but from the most Ancient, Modern, and Admired Historians to Our Time. The imprint is listed as London: Printed by William Stanby and Jacob Bloom, 1624. The only records we find of the 1624 edition were printed by Adam Islip and bears the title "Gunaikeion, or, Nine bookes of various history concerning women: inscribed by ye names of nine muses," but has an alternate title of "Generall History of Women." The latter title seems to be used for the 1657 edition. The text block indeed appears to be "Gunaikeion..." with the index relating the various sections to the respective Muses. 4to, marbled leather; collation: vi, 464; pp177-178 loose but present, as is 333-334, but 335-336 is missing. Appears to be a scarce edition of this work. Condition: Boards are rough and coming loose, corners chewed, and text block is in several pieces (hence loose pages). A few pages were not cut properly, and the edges have scuffed over the centuries. Moderate toning of sections, scattered foxing. Previous owner's bookplate inside front cover.
