A collection of eleven autograph letters and fragments, by women correspondents, including three by Lady Byron.
lady noel byron -- Autograph letter in the third person to Mr. Smith, Leamington: 10 October, n.d [c.1821] 1½ pp., folded sheet (185 x 112 mm). Condition: small tears at edge to folds. Provenance: George Milne sale, Christie’s New York/ Stonehill, 5 December 1991, lot 353 (part of). Lady Byron regrets she will not be able to visit Mr. Smith on account of her ill health, “owing to a severe attack”, but sends her regards and thanks him for some pamphlets. --Autograph letter in the third person to Lord Sidmouth, [ca.1821]. 1p. (116 x 108 mm). Provenance: Kenneth W. Rendell, Inc., and J. Wilson. A brief letter requesting permission to “drive in the Park during her stay in Richmond”. --An address panel to Miss H. Brown in Glasgow, 24 December, 1813. 1 p. (80 x 126 mm). Condition: mounted on card, postmark. sarah ponsonby -- Autograph letter signed to Mrs. A. Hayman in diary form, 21-28 August 1831. 3 2/3 pp., densely written in red and black on black-edged paper, folded sheet (225 x 185 mm). Condition: remnants of seal, seal hole, Llangollen postmark. Provenance from Pickering & Chatto. A detailed daily account of a week at the end of August. agnes berry (1764-1852)-- Autograph letter signed “A Berry” to Mrs. Mostyn at Upper Seymour Street, Sunday morning , n.d. 1½ pp., folded sheet (113 x 183 mm), with integral address panel. Condition: central fold reinforced, two seal holes not affecting text. Provenance: sale Christie’s New York, 5 December 1991, lot 353 (part of). Ms. Berry inquires after the whereabouts of an artist, Mr. Page, who is rumored to be in town, and invites Mrs. Mostyn to dinner: “…I am beged by Lady Elizabeth Stuart to enquire whether Mr. Page an artist whom I believe you protect, is in town… Can you come + eat with me on Tuesday at half past 6?…” [With:] Six autograph letters and fragments, comprising of: elizabeth gaskell signed “E.C. Gaskell”, 46 Plymouth Grove, April 8 , n.y.; an autograph letter signed by ellen derry , Sunday evening , n.d.; a letter by lady caroline lamb , n.d., endorsed in a different hand on the verso; an autograph letter signed by sydney morgan , 10th april Monday morn 7 oclock , n.y.; another signed “M.S. Leacroft ”, Southwell, 18 January 1847; and one autograph fragment signed by francis anne kemble , Monday 27th January 1862 . [With:] devonshire , Georgiana Cavendish, Fifth Duchess of Devonshire; (1757-1808). Autograph letter signed “G Devonshire” to an unnamed correspondent. [N.p.], 24 April [c.1800]. 1 page, verso left blank (193 x 159mm). Condition: contemporary red ink inscription on verso citing the supposed date of the letter and the name ‘Duchess Devonshire’, remnants of former mounting, minor tear at one fold, usual folds, some creases, slightly faded. A letter to not send her draft due to Drummonds until four o’clock the following day and promising that if it is due the day after, the money will reach him early.
