FRYKE, Christopher (b.1650) and Christopher SCHEWITZER (fl.1675-1683) A relation of two several voyages made into the East-Indies. London: For Printed [sic] D. Brown, et al, 1700. Rare first edition in English, translated from the Dutch. Fryke (Frick), a surgeon with the Dutch East-India Company, furnishes a detailed account of his voyages (from 1680-1686) around the flourishing Dutch settlements in the East Indies, including Batavia, Java (with an account of the fierce battles with the Javaians), Banda, Amboina, as well as Ceylon, Formosa, Japan, Bengal and Siam. Schewitzer's wanderings in the East-Indies spanned 1675 to 1683; he describes in detail Ceylon, the pearl-fisheries and gem mines, plus exotic animals, culminating with his shipwreck and fortunate rescue. Not in Cordier; Cox I, 282; Howgego Encyclopedia of exploration to 1800 F75 and S71; Wing F-2230. Octavo (196 x 119mm). Title-page within double-rule border, last leaf with list of 'Books lately printed' (clean tear to F2 crossing text, tiny amount of worming in gutter in gatherings R-T just touching a couple of letters). Early speckled calf (spine darkened, joints starting, corners slightly rubbed and bumped). Provenance: Thomas Cartwright of Aynho in Northhampton (armorial bookplate) – The Frank S. Streeter Library (sold Christie's New York 16-17 April 2007 lot 210).
