The XK120 owes its success, indeed its existence, to several exceptional individuals. Jaguar founder and guiding spirit William Lyons used the hiatus in Jaguar production dictated by World War II to encourage his engineers to design Jaguar’s first proprietary engine. Jaguar Chief Engineer Bill Heynes supported by Claude Baily and Walter Hassan created a high performance dual overhead camshaft engine to capitalize on Jaguar’s sporting image. When the engine was ready before the Mark V series saloons, Lyons penned an open two seat sports model to showcase the new XK-series engine. It was conceived as a low production model to demonstrate the XK’s performance, clothed in hand-hammered aluminum body panels, with production of only 200 units planned. The XK120’s introduction at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show was a sensation, immediately overshadowing the sporting sedans that were Jaguar’s bread and butter. William Lyons, never one to miss a commercial opportunity, quickly recognized the XK120’s potential, commissioned tooling for steel bodywork and capitalized on the XK120’s combination of performance (it was, at the time, the fastest production car in the world), compelling style and moderate cost. Eventually 12,045 were built. Later Jaguar XKs got real bumpers, chrome trim strips, cushy seats and up to 265hp, but no XK so clearly epitomized the Jaguar combination of clean unadorned styling and exceptional performance as the original XK120 Roadster. The three owner example offered here is from California where cars like this XK120 have been part of the world’s most car-conscious culture: enthusiastically used but carefully maintained, preserved and fastidiously restored in a benign climate. Traditionally presented in white with red leather interior, it was restored 10 years ago and benefits from a new black mohair tonneau cover and top. Described by the owner as in good condition throughout, it has Belgian papers and current roadworthiness certificate, and is ideal for this summer’s season. Plus tard, les XK seront équipées de vrais pare-chocs, de bandes chromées, de sièges rembourrés et d'une puissance de 265 CV, mais aucune XK n'illustrera aussi clairement que le XK120 Roadster original la combinaison de design dépouillé et de performances exceptionnelles propre à la marque. Le modèle proposé ici vient de Californie, une région où des voitures comme cette XK120 font partie de la culture automobile la plus développée du monde: utilisée avec enthousiasme mais entretenue avec soin, conservée et méticuleusement restaurée dans une atmosphère bienveillante. Carrosserie blanche avec intérieur en cuir rouge, elle a été restaurée il y a 10 ans et est dotée d'une capote et d'un couvre-capote neufs en mohair noir. Décrite par son troisième et actuel propriétaire comme étant en bon état général, avec papiers belges et contrôle technique valable, elle est parfaite pour une utilisation estivale.
