Here begynneth the fyrst volum [the thirde and fourthe boke] of Syr Johan Froyssart: oft the Chronycles of Englande, Fraunce, Spayne, Portyngale, Scotlande, Bretayne, Flaunders, and other places adioynynge. Translated out of frenche into our materall Englysshe tonge by Johan Bouchier knyght lorde berners . London: vol.I. [Robert Redman and] William Middleton [ca. 1540]; vol.II. Richard Pynson, 31 August 1525. 2 volumes in one, 2° (315 x 215mm). Collation: Vol.I: A 6 B 4 a-v 6 aa-vv 6 3a-3n 6 o 4 ; vol.II: a 8 A-U 6 AA-UU 6 3A-3N6 3O 8 . Large woodcut initials, woodcut titlepage border to each volume [the first made up from 7 ornaments; the second McKerrow & Ferguson 8], woodcut armorial of Henry VIII on verso of each title and Pynson's arms on verso of last leaf. (Title slightly soiled; small marginal tear at head, also in s3, repaired without loss.) Contemporary London calf, tooled in blind to a panel design with two rolls [the inner Oldham Panel Bindings 504, plate 35; the outer Oldham 913, plate 54], two brass clasps and hasps, (both covers detached, later label). Provenance : Philip Mainwaring, pret:18s, probably the Secretary for Ireland (1589-1661) before he was knighted in 1634 (signature on flyleaf); Sir Henry Mainwaring (18th-century bookplate); Rev. Thomas Corser, bought at his sale, Sotheby's 17 March 1869 (pencil note) by John Wilkinson for William Tite for ¨90 (letter pasted in); Cardiff Castle bookplate. FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND VOLUME; second edition of the first volume, a line-for-line reprint of the first edition made after this volume had gone out-of-print. The chronicle covers the years 1325 to 1400 and was translated by John Bourchier, Lord Berners (1467-1533) at the command of Henry VIII. STC 11396.5 (vol.I) and 11397 (vol.II)
