FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR]. SHIRLEY, William (1694-1771), British Governor of Massachusetts . Document signed ("W. Shirley") as Governor, addressed to "Rt. Hon b le WILLIAM PITT Paymaster General of His Majesty's Land Forces," Boston, New England, 17 December 1747. 1 page, folio, verso docketed . Fine condition. SHIRLEY TO PITT REGARDING THE "EXPEDITION AGAINST CANADA." During the last North American phase of the War of Austrian Succession (1742-1748), Govenor Shirley requisitions funds from Pitt (1708-1778), to pay for the New England volunteers who had served in the Louisbourg campaign: "When the Parliament of Great Britain shall make Provision for Paying the Troops rais'd for the late intended Expedition against Canada. Be pleas'd to order Payment of this my third of Exchange...to Mr. Daniel Ayrault or order, [£100] Sterling...upon Account of the pay for Discharging the Non commissioned officers and Private Men of the Late Regiment of which Brigadr. General Waldo was Colonel rais'd for the aforesaid Service." Shirley, one of the ablest administrators among colonial governors, was largely responsible for the impressive land and sea expedition which captured Fort Louisbourg from the French in 1745. Brigadier General Samuel Waldo (1695-1759) was second in command of the Massachusetts forces during that successful campaign.
