Beschreibung:

Fremont, J[ohn] C[harles], (1813-1890). Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842, and to Oregon and North California in the Years 1843-'44. Washington (DC): Gales and Seaton, printers, 1845 (Senate Doc. 174, 28th Congress, 2d Session). 8vo, embossed brown cloth, 693pp. Includes 22 plates - views, botany, fossils - facing pages: 38, 41, 55, 57, 66, 70, 114, 142, 164, 167, 184, 217, 234, 302, 304, 306, 308, 310, 312, 314, 317, and 319. Folding maps between pp. 132-133 and 246-247, and single page maps facing pp. 136 and 155 (Great Salt Lake). Plus pages and pages of distances, meteorological observations and astronomical observations. This was the edition thousands of emigrants would use between 1845-1849 to reach Oregon and California. His later edition would be written more for the general interest, omitting these hundreds of pages of observations. However, by the time the later summary came out, news of the discovery of gold had reached Fremont, and his later volume contained one of the first descriptions of the gold fields. Condition: Only light, scattered toning. Previous owner's gift inscription on ffep and later owners' bookplates on pastedown. Moderate shelfwear, with some fraying of lower edge on rear board. Corners bumped. Overall very good. In custom clamshell box.
