Philadelphia: B. Franklin, 1747. iv, 64 pp., 4to (210 x 165 mm). Original blue paper wrappers, uncut. Housed in a cloth chemise and red morocco-backed folding case. Condition : some foxing and light dampstaining, first signature detached; wrappers a bit browned, minor chips and edge tears, wrapper spine partially perished. Provenance : Mr. Jones?; Abel Morgan (signature and inscriptions on front wrapper and title). first american edition. a franklin imprint in wrappers, in unsophisticated condition. “This series of letters once erroneously ascribed to the pen of B. Franklin by Sabin [citing the catalogue to the Menzies sale] was printed originally in London” (Miller). The early owner of this copy, Abel Morgan (1713-1785) was born in the Welsh Tract, was ordained a Baptist minister in 1734, and in 1738 was chosen pastor of the church at Middletown, New Jersey. Interestingly, the same year as this imprint, Franklin published a religious discourse by Morgan concerning infant baptism (see Miller 425).
