Description At the start of the 1970s Frank Stella explored the same imagery within both prints and paintings with roughly equal measure. While making such luminous paintings as those within his Newfoundland series, Stella simultaneously expanded upon that same protractor motif in the 1971 print York Factory I . With a namesake deriving from a renowned ghost town in the Canadian province of Manitoba, this print is gossamer and ethereal. York Factory I ’s misty pastels also powerfully evoked one of its artist’s very first screenprints, Pastel Stack , 1970, in which graceful forms in delicate hues existed within three separate planes of geometric imagery. In York Factory I such geometric shapes condensed into one linear progression, making this print a union of geometries as well as a union of Frank Stella’s equally inquisitive painting and printmaking practices.
