Beschreibung:

Frank Auerbach Reclining Head of Julia II, 2000 Oil on panel. 12 x 12 1/4 in. (30.5 x 31.1 cm).
Provenance Galeria Malborough, Madrid; Private collection, United States; Private collection, London Exhibited Madrid, Galeria Malborough, Frank Auerbach Pinturas y Dibujos, February 7 – March 9, 2001 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay Reclining Head of Julia II is seminal work and a primary example of Auerbach’s mature body of work. Intensely layered and richly painted, this work is a signature work of the artist’s abstracted portraits of people. In basing the portraits on people he knows, Auerbach finds himself freely able to express himself – a freedom that provides him with a painterly awareness to fuse the elements of abstraction and figuration together. “Working always and resolutely from the model, Auerbach’s paintings and drawings, each superficially the result of a single session but finished only after countless previous sittings, are wonderfully alive with a sense of immediacy. A presence as a raw truth. As Auerbach’s sitters tend to be family and friends, so his landscapes are of corners of London close to the studio and known intimately to Auerbach. The same process of constant reworking, from sketches made on the spot, produces wonderfully exciting images of great invention and freshness. A painter of great integrity.” (Marlborough Gallery, Frank Auerbach Recent Work, 2006) Read More
