Lot of 5: Eisenhower, Dwight D. (1890-1969). President of the United States (1953-1961). TLS, 2pp., framed with envelope to 19.75 x 15 in., Washington, D.C. September 16, 1960. Written on White House letterhead and addressed to The Honorable William H. Townsend, thanking him for his service as a member of the Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Presidential appointment, framed to 24.75 x 21 in., November 29, 1957, signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower countersigned by John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State. Truman appointed William Townsend as a member of the Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Nicholson, Meredith. (1866-1942). Best-selling author and politician. TLS, 1p., framed with brief biography and advertisement for a book of Kentucky history by William Townsend to 21.75 x 13.75 in., Indianapolis, IN. January 18, 1930. Addressed to "Dearest Anne," written in praise of the book, entitled Lincoln and his Wife's Home Town (1929). Copies of original documents and photographs relating to Robert, Willie, and Tad Lincoln, including a check President Lincoln issued to Tad enticing him to take his medicine following a serious illness, reading: "Pay to 'Tad' when he is well enough to present - Five Dollars," with Lincoln's signature. Group framed to 23.75 x 17 in. Framed assortment of ephemera from Townsend's collection, mostly photocopies, 30.75 x 28.25 in., including a page from The Revised Statutes of Indiana, Lincoln's first law book; a photograph of David Turnham, who loaned Revised Statutes to Lincoln; letter from Lincoln to Turnham, Springfield, IL. October 23, 1860; and pages from Ida Tarbell's The Life of Abraham Lincoln (1900).
