He concludes that the news of the Declaration of Independence has reached the Fort and "Major General Horatio Gates had the Whole Army Drawn up...& forty seven Guns fird & three Chears for the Independent States of America." The British force ascended Lake Champlain two months later, and their much larger fleet met and defeated the American flotilla, commanded by Benedict Arnold. The Americans' stiff resistance, though, and the late season prevented the British from advancing on Ticonderoga before winter set in; Burgoyne's expedition was deferred until the following year.
