The order was founded by Cosimo de' Medici in 1562 and one of its main aims was the defense of Tuscany's coast against pirates. The fine plates illustrate battles at Algiers, Negroponte, Bona, Sisto, Namur and elsewhere. The present copy belonged to the Italian writer Ugo Ojetti. Atabey 441; Graesse II, 611.
