Crucifixion, miniature on a bifolium cut from a Book of Hours, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Rouen, c.1470s-80s]
A vibrant miniature from the workshop of one of the leading Rouen illuminators of the second half of the 15th century.
199 x 148mm. The Crucifixion within a full border inhabited by fantastical beasts and flowers opening the Hours of the Cross in a Book of Hours, 23 lines of text, ruled space: 120 x 76mm, 13 one-line initials in gold with grounds of blue or red, 9 larger initials on gold grounds inhabited by flowers, line-fillers, rubrics in red, initials touched in yellow, prickings survive (small loss of pigment to the Virgin's face and to St John's hair, slight marginal staining).
Illumination:
The animated, moon-faced, short-necked figures, and the horizontally striated trees in a palette of luminous greens, rich reds and browns and deep blues, are all features of the workshop of the Master of the Rouen Echevinage (fl.1455-85), the dominant illuminator in Rouen in the second half of the 15th century (see F. Avril and N. Reynaud, Les manuscrits à peintures en France, 1993, pp.170-2).
