Venusti's lost painting is based on a carefully finished drawing by his associate Michelangelo Buonarotti, now in the Royal Collection at Windsor (Inv. no. RCIN 912772). The original painting, for which Michelangelo most probably drew this design, was in the collection of Richard Cosway in the 18th century, and is now only known through an engraving (in R.
