TITLED BY FLEMING ON FIRST RECTO IN BLUE INK: "THE PROPERTY OF A LADY BY IAN FLEMING " Accompanying illustration (also from The Ivory Hammer ) for the story attached. "The Property of a Lady," first published in the United States in the January 1964 issue of Playboy takes James Bond to Sotheby's in order to identify a Russian Agent bidding on a Faberge Terrestrial Globe, described as "A sphere carved from an extraordinarily large piece of Siberian emerald matrix weighing approximately one thousand three hundred carats and of a superb colour and vivid translucence, represents a globe supported upon an elaborate rocaille scroll mount finely chased in quatre-couleur gold and set with a profusion of rose-diamonds and small emeralds of intense colour, to form a table clock." (p. 13) Thanks to Bond, the KGB's plan to buy the globe as a payoff to double agent, Maria Freudenstein, is foiled. Originally published in Great Britain in The Ivory Hammer: The Year At Sotheby's, 219th Season 1962-1963 , this story was later added to the paperback version of Octopussy . In "The Hildebrand Rarity", Bond, in the Seychelles on official business and hopelessly bored, tags along on a yachting expedition to find a rare tropical fish called the "Hildebrand Rarity". When Bond's host, Mr. Krest, is mysteriously strangled, it is up to Bond to cover up the murder and get rid of the corpse. First published in the United States in the March 1960 issue of Playboy , "The Hildebrand Rarity" was also included in For Your Eyes Only (London, 1960). (2)
