Title: Five photograph albums with over 1,000 photographs taken by a young Japanese woman living in California in the 1920s and 1930s Author: Ichiyasu, Maki Place: California Publisher: Date: 1922-38 Description: Five photograph albums: 245 original photographs from the life of a young Japanese woman living in California, including a few photographs taken in San Francisco, some in Pacific Grove (one taken by the sign for Asilomar Resort), a few in Los Angeles, and more. The smallest photographs are 1¾x1", and the largest photographs are 7x9½". There are several larger silverprint group portraits, including one of the Christian Y.P. 10th Annual So. Calif. Conference attendees, Oct. 1-3, 1937. Taken by Tanaka Studio, in L.A. The photographs are all pasted to black leaves within a brown cloth photograph album, the name Maki Ichiyasu in gilt on front cover. Dating from 1937-38. 224 original photographs taken in Russian River, Watsonville, San Francisco and Sonora. Many photographs of friends and family, plus some a few studio portraits of family from Motoyoshi Photograph Studio in San Francisco. Includes several photos from the Y.M.C.A. trip to Camp McCoy in 1927 and 1929 (most are captioned). Pasted to black leaves within a photograph album. Dated from 1922-1929. 84 small snap shot photographs, most measure around 3¼x3¼". Photographs of Maki and her friends in the Y.W.C.A., on a trip to Hawaii. 234 original photographs of Maki with friends and family. Most are taken in and around San Francisco, some aboard ships, plus some at Santa Catalina, a few at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, a few at Inspiration Point in Orinda, and more. Dating from around 1941. 243 original photographs of Maki, friends and family taken on a trip she made through the American Southwest. Includes a real photo postcard of the Grand View Hotel in Parker, Arizona, and a real photo postcard of a tree in Topaz, Utah. The first leaf in the album is inscribed "To Maki - Bon Voyage from Aiko Kurami. Jan'y 1940." Photographs and inscriptions within date from 1940-1945. A lovely archive of 5 photograph albums from a young Japanese woman named Maki Ichiyasu, who was a member of the Japanese Y.W.C.A. and other young leadership groups. The photographs relay a happy time for the young woman with her friends across the state of California from San Francisco to Los Angeles, a time just prior to the mass Japanese relocation during World War II. Albums include photos of of horseback riding, a few from a Japanese Y.W.C.A. camping trips such as one at Camp Estelle, California, (one of which is a group portrait of the girls that measures 7x9½"), snap shots in SF at Coit Tower, a few fishing, portraits of friends, babies, and more. A few photographs are inscribed in ink to Maki from friends and family. Maki was relocated in 1942, and a few years after her internment, she moved to Milwaukee, where she continued to participate in leadership organizations. Albums contain photographs taken while in Russian River, Watsonville and Sonora County. One album is from a trip to Hawaii Maki took with her friends. Lot Amendments Condition: A few photographs have yellowed, but most are near fine. Item number: 248778
