Beschreibung:

First Toluca Edition of Heredía's Poetry José María Heredía, 1832 HEREDÍA, José María (1803-1839). Poesías del ciudadano José-Maria de Heredía, ministro de la audiencia de México. Segunda edición, corregida y aumentada. Toluca [Mexico]: Imprenta del Estado a cargo de Juan Matute, 1832. Exceedingly rare edition of the poetry of Heredía, the first Romantic poet of the Americas and national poet of Cuba. Heredía was a Cuban-born poet considered to be the first romantic poet of the Americas and the initiator of Latin American romanticism. He is known as "El Cantor del Niagara" and regarded as one of the most important poets in the Spanish language. The first edition of Heredía’s poetry, issued by Spanish-language publishers Behr & Kahl in New York in 1825 while the poet was in exile in the United States, is much more common in institutional collections than this Mexican edition. Its publication was supervised by Heredía, and it was the most complete collection of his poetry published during his lifetime. In the preface, Heredía mentions the first edition of his poetry published several years earlier in the United States, so the Toluca editors called this the "second edition;" the true second edition of the Toluca imprint appeared in 1852. Heredía has been named National Poet of Cuba. No auction records for this first Toluca edition, and only three copies recorded in institutional collections in WorldCat: Yale, Harvard, and the University of Texas Benson Collection. Not in Sabin, who only cites the 1852 Toluca edition (31482). Two volumes in one, 16mo (141 x 96mm). Light toning throughout. Modern green morocco with black and red inlays, gilt (Zambrano library label on back endpapers); modern slipcase. Provenance: Pedro J. Guiteras (1814-1890, Cuban historian; ink stamp on title page) – Dr. Jorge Beato Núñez (fl. 1950s-1960s, Cuban-American pediatrician; ink stamps on five pages).
