Beschreibung:

"J-MISSION SIM BAY SM 112/113 COMMON." Large blueprint, 18 x 11 inches, of the Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) Bay located in the Service Module. Exact details of SM (Service Module) 112/113 (for Apollo 15 and 16) are illustrated. The letter "J" refers to type of Apollo mission having the most complex engineering and scientific objectives. They used the longest duration Apollo vehicles of the program. The blueprint identifies the location of the PAN Camera made by ITEK and the Mapping Camera made by Fairchild. These two cameras used large film cassettes which required the Apollo Command Module Pilot to make an EVA (spacewalk) to physically retrieve the film prior to earth re-entry. This EVA occurred after the CSM left lunar orbit and was returning to Earth. While in lunar orbit, a Particles and Field SubSatellite (seen at the lower left) was launched from the bay to measure the lunar environment from an altitude varying from 60 to 85 miles. Other science instruments that collected data during lunar orbit are shown including the Alpha and X-Ray Spectrometer, Gamma Ray and Mass Spectrometers, and a Laser Altimeter. SIGNED by AL WORDEN and INSCRIBED "Apollo 15. First Deep Space EVA" at the bottom center of the blueprint.
